What makes car batteries die?

Car batteries are basically energy storage devices that relay a current at a certain voltage. The voltage and current the battery generates is caused by a chemical reaction inside the battery. In cold conditions, expansion and contraction occurs in the discharge and recharge cycles. This can cause sediment to develop within the battery and short it out. Conversely, hot conditions can lead to deterioration resulting from excessive heat and vibration, or water loss. When such issues result in the batteries no longer sustaining a discharge current, car batteries die.

Standard voltage for car batteries is 12 volts, and the battery is considered fully charged at 12.6 volts. A drop in voltage, to any degree, will impact the battery’s performance.
