5 Signs Your Vehicle May Be Due for a Wheel Alignment

A wheel alignment might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about routine vehicle maintenance, but it can make a noticeable difference in how your vehicle drives—and how long your tires last.

Over time, everyday driving can cause your alignment to shift. Potholes, curbs, rough roads and normal wear on suspension components can all contribute. The good news is that your vehicle will often give you clues when something isn’t quite right.

Here are five common signs it may be time to have your alignment checked.

1. Your Vehicle Pulls to One Side

When you’re driving on a relatively flat, straight road, your vehicle should track straight without requiring constant correction. If you notice it consistently drifting or pulling to the left or right, improper wheel alignment could be one possible cause.

2. Your Steering Wheel Isn’t Straight

Take a look at your steering wheel while traveling straight ahead. If the wheel appears noticeably off-center even though the vehicle is moving straight, your alignment may need attention.

3. Your Tires Are Wearing Unevenly

Uneven tire wear is one of the biggest reasons to stay on top of wheel alignment. If one edge of a tire is wearing significantly faster than the other, alignment or suspension issues may be contributing.

Catching the problem early may help you get more usable life out of your tires.

4. The Steering Feels Different

Does your vehicle suddenly feel less stable or precise than it used to? Changes in steering and handling can have several causes, including tire pressure, worn steering or suspension components and wheel alignment.

If something feels different behind the wheel, it’s worth having it inspected.

5. You Recently Hit a Pothole or Curb

Sometimes you know exactly what may have caused the problem. A hard hit to a pothole or curb can affect alignment and potentially damage tires, wheels or suspension components.

Even if you don’t notice an immediate problem, an inspection can provide some peace of mind after a particularly hard impact.

Don’t Ignore the Signs

Proper wheel alignment can help your vehicle handle as intended while promoting more even tire wear. If you’ve noticed pulling, uneven tread wear, an off-center steering wheel or changes in handling, consider having your vehicle inspected.

A simple alignment check today could help prevent unnecessary tire wear and bigger problems down the road.
