Cars, trucks and SUVs make plenty of normal sounds, but a new squeak, grinding noise, rattle or hum can sometimes be an early warning that something needs attention.
You don’t have to diagnose the problem yourself. You just need to recognize when a new sound deserves a closer look.
Here are six vehicle noises you shouldn’t ignore.
1. Squealing When You Brake
A high-pitched squeal when applying the brakes may indicate that your brake pads are getting worn. Some brake pads are specifically designed to make noise when they reach a certain level of wear.
Brake noise can have several causes, so an inspection is the best way to determine what’s happening.
2. Grinding When Braking
Grinding is a sound worth addressing promptly. In some cases, it can mean brake components are significantly worn and metal surfaces are making contact.
Because your braking system is critical to vehicle safety, unusual grinding should be inspected as soon as possible.
3. Clicking When You Turn
A repeated clicking or popping sound while making a turn can sometimes point to an issue with a CV joint or another steering or suspension component.
If the noise becomes more noticeable during sharp turns, make a note of when it happens and tell your service technician.
4. Humming or Growling That Changes With Speed
A humming, roaring or growling sound that becomes louder as you accelerate may be related to your tires or wheel bearings.
